Notes from the cutting room — Marigold

Three months in, the assembly is loose, the act breaks are still suggestions, and the question I am holding closest is the one I cannot answer yet.

Every project arrives with a question it does not know how to ask. Marigold’s is about absence — what you leave out, what the camera turns away from, what the cut refuses to show.

The current assembly runs 22 minutes. It will not run 22 minutes when we are done. It will run somewhere between 13 and 16, depending on how much I can bear to remove. The footage is generous. The film, I suspect, will be smaller than the footage.
